Special Educational Needs

At Alderwood 4-16 School we ensure that all children are valued equally, regardless of their ability and/or social, emotional or behavioural needs.

 

The school recognises that all children are entitled to have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which is differentiated to meet their individual needs. We support the vulnerable pupils in the school in partnership with their parents/carers, and working alongside the whole school staff to enable them to achieve their best in becoming more confident and independent learners. To “be the best they can be”. We highly value the contribution that parents can make to this process, and welcome parents into the school to discuss the needs of their children. Alderwood School has two Sencos. One for the Seniors, Sean Cooper, and one for the Primary sites, Kath Sherrington. 

The Sencos are responsible for co-ordinating and monitoring SEN provision from 4-16, and they manage the learning support according to the individual needs of the children. They regularly liaise with a number of external agencies, including speech & language therapists, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, etc. 

Appointments can be made to see Sean or Kath via the school reception for each site.

Implementation of the SEN Policy/SEN Information Report

The governors review the SEN policy on a regular basis, and meet with the Sencos to monitor and review provision. The SEN Governor is James Scarlett. The SEN policy is being effectively implemented and this has led to children with SEN progressing well in school, and achieving their full potential.

Teachers and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) continue to be dedicated to supporting the specific needs of the children in their care. All adults supporting the children are extremely positive and flexible in their approach to supporting the children in the very best way they can. Staff have welcomed advice and support from external agencies to improve their provision for the children.
